Music Review: “Sounds Like You” by Kirby Krackle

Kirby Krackle’s new album (Sounds Like You) explores the kooky tendencies of the nerd heart.

A couple years ago, while attending the very first C2E2, I was wandering the floor and perusing merchandise. Not surprisingly, one of the booths that will always stick with me is Kirby Krackle’s. All I remember is two guys telling me they were in a nerd-rock group as they handed me a business card. After the super-powered shrapnel of the con cleared and I had returned home from a weekend in the city, I started poking through all the post-cards, business cards, and other free con swag I had acquired. When I found a free moment to check out Kirby Krackle’s music, I was immediately hooked. I mean, they had a ukulele song about the zombie apocalypse as well as a badass rock song about being Green Lantern. Who wouldn’t be hooked?!

Vinyl Veins Music Reviews: Mini Mixtape #1

I’ve got something fun to mix things up a little: I wanted a chance to use my favorite hobby! Mixtapes are something I have been doing since I was seven years old and got my first Sony double tape deck/radio. As a result of this obsession, if you have known me longer than two minutes, then I have probably made you a mixtape at some point. I can’t help it.

So, I have decided that I am going give you a mini mixtape for every 10th Vinyl Veins blog. Sometimes they may have a theme and sometimes they may just be random songs that I just really like, but I want to share my love of them all the same.

The Man of Steel is set to release tomorrow, and again Superman is abuzz in Hollywood for the first time since Superman Returns’ release back in 2006. Now, maybe the past seven years have sent you into Super-withdrawal — experiencing pain even kryptonite couldn’t match — or maybe waiting until that midnight show on Friday is weakening you worse than living days on end under a red sun. Well, instead of curling into the fetal position and sobbing on the floor because you’ve exhausted your Action Comics collection for the last time, give this review a try.

My Overlooked Skills I Wish People Would Endorse on LinkedIn

LinkedIn endorsements were created to make professionals feel better about their job skills. So why am I annoyed every time someone endorses me in something I feel I don’t deserve (or care about)?

Many of my real job talents bubble beneath the surface, just waiting to be endorsed by my connections. Life is about more than WordPress knowledge and Adobe Creative Suite, you know. Why don’t my LinkedIn connections notice my overlooked job skills instead? Shouldn’t real-life job talents carry as much weight as the rest? Unlike program experience, these skills effortlessly transfer over to any job in any office in any industry.

Letterbound

By Jill Zero

He stood outside of the brown tri-level, motionless except for the slight tremble in his hand as he read the letter he’d been putting off reading for what felt like an eternity. His eyes grazed the page in silence and processed the words in a cavern he didn’t know existed within his brain. He reluctantly wrapped his mind around the well-chosen words as if they’d vanish from the page once he’d understood them. Funny, he thought, how much power words had after etched into physical form, and even when their authors had disappeared or had long been rotting in the ground. It was funny how specific passages leapt out faster than the others, too.

     You’re selfish.

Deep down, he knew he should have read it sooner. The potential message had careened back and forth in his unstable subconscious for months, taunting him and haunting him and dripping with the thing he resented most – loneliness. But loneliness threatened to permeate his shell prior to receiving the letter in the first place. He wasn’t used to that. Some days it became so heavy that he swore it almost spawned within him, and he let it eat him alive. Then he finally gave in and dug out the letter from its hiding place.

Letting go had never come easily to Frederick. And the letter was a one-way ticket to letting go.
